History of the Sportster

[The Sportster entered the scene in 1957 at a time when hot rod culture was thriving. The name of the game was power and speed, especially among younger riders. The original Sportster was built to impress in both these arenas and boasted an Ironhead engine and twin-spring rear suspension. It was met with great success and Harley-Davidson worked to expand the Sportster line.

Over the years, the specs and features were improved as technology advanced and consumer interests changed. One of the biggest changes occurred in 1986 with the upgrade to the Evolution® engine. Within the last few years, the switch was made to 5-speed transmission. The classic look of the Sportster remained while adapting to modern tastes.

As the Sportster technology advanced, Harley-Davidson expanded their line to include more and more models. Each were created to satisfied the needs of different demographics of riders. As the model line grew, so did the Sportster fan base. Now it’s known as one of the most sought after motorcycle lineups due to their power and versatility.

The Iron 1200™

When you strip a motorcycle down to the essentials, you get the Iron 1200. Running off the Evolution engine, it offers 1200 cc of raw power. Add the high amount of torque to get an unforgettable ride.

The aesthetics of the motorcycle are stripped down too. Avoid paying extra for features that don’t affect the riding performance. Enjoy a slim, lighter model. The Iron 1200 features head-turning style accents. Everything that can be blacked out will be blacked out. The fuel tank design and custom play off of retro designs to create a retro feel. If you want to make the motorcycle design more personalized, you can add the Screamin’ Eagle® customization package.

Sportster® Forty-Eight® Special

Your eye will be immediately drawn to the classic 70s-inspired tank. It pairs old school design with innovative power. The Sportster Forty-Eight Special runs off the air-cooled Evolution 1200 V-Twin in the low frame, which offers low-end torque and an ear piercing engine roar. The 49mm front fork with cartridge dampening matches well with the triple clamps and force brace. Customization options, like slammed handlebars and the fat MT90 front tire, give a nod to the rebellious motorcycle culture of the 70s. The Sportster Forty-Eight Special perfectly combines the old school design and modern innovations to offer an unparalleled ride.
